The Drama of Facial Hair

I grow facial hair like a 3 year old.

It’s sad really.

I shave about once a week and there are times when people don’t even notice. Nice to have a baby face, but for “Earthlings Beware” Rene suggested a VanDyke for my science teacher character, and I agree with her. I end up on the wrong side of right in this play and I think an Evil Spock VanDyke is just the kind of facial hair that a man like that would sport.

And glasses. I want black horn-rimmed glasses as well.

But back to the facial hair – I want to grow out my own beard for this show so begins THE 2011 DON’T SHAVE-A-THON!

Actually I will be shaving, but in a way that encourages the growth of the VanDyke and nothing else.

Here is a picture of how I think I will look with the facial hair and glasses:

Pretty hot right?!

See you tomorrow!

My Drink with Hollywood – The Curtis Andersen Interview

I was doing so well keeping up with writing everyday! We have family in from out of town, my grandparents aunt and uncle, and Rene and I have been on a tear with them doing all kinds of California things. Today they are at Disneyland and I am updating all the websites and social networks.

…and packages.

…and casting memorandums.

There’s a lot to do, it’s actually a little daunting when I think about it. That’s why to-do lists are nice, written down it looks much easier but when I see some of the tasks I know that they might be easy to complete but still time consuming. All complaining aside here is a nice way to spend about ten minutes -watch me on YouTube! This is not a WiggyWebs show but an interview show hosted by actor/director Michael May called “My Drink with Hollywood.” I do worry that some things may come off different than intended, but that is probably just my “actor insecurity” kicking in. Or I’m a total ass. Either way I think it’s a good interview and I hope you enjoy it!

Also, I know the WiggyWebs release schedule is all jacked up, I’m sorry about that. We’ve been having editing trouble, but all the technical issues look like they’re fixed now and we are catching up. “Make-Up with The Wolf” should be up today, worst case later this week. “Ray” will be on time and, God willing, so should “3 Minutes.”

Now, back to work!

See you tomorrow!

What?!?! Is that a new URL?!?!?

Yes!

And no.

I’ve owned CurtisAndersen.com for quite a while, but it has gone through some… developmental problems.  Some of you may remember the last debacle before I just pointed to the MySpace page – but now that MySpace is horribly irrelevant and I actually do like it when people read my blog I’m pointing the URL to my blog!

Now I should probably mention that I intend this to be a temporary fix.  I’m meeting with the web team soon to pop-up the Cheerleaders Must Die page and we have already been talking about how to manifest the new CurtisAndersen.com page.  We have a solution but I’m not a code guy so it may take a while even then, though, the primary focus will be the blog so why not start now?

In other news there’s a new “Story Time with Ray”:

Have some neat things in the pipe.  I’ll mention them when they actually become something.

See you tomorrow!

I’m Featured on The Shmimcast!

Quick post to point you to episode #5 of Shmimcast, the podcast all about Improv Shmimprov!  You can get it in iTunes and here: www.ShmimCast.com

If you’re a fan of Improv Shmimprov then these are great podcasts about how the show got started and insights into the players.  For people new to Shmimprov it might be a little too inside baseball, but I think it’s still worth a listen.

Oh, and the whole reason why I’m plugging this is because I’m featured on episode 5!  At least check out that one.

And come to a live Shmimprov show: www.improvshmimprov.com.

Project 365 8-2-2010 Delays, Excuses, Etc.

There was a four day delay on the blog posts, sorry about that.  This is turning into a bad habit.  This time there was a better reason than usual, Rene is going through an ISP switch and so we didn’t have internet all weekend except via phone.

Honestly I’m also really starting to feel the crunch time wise. Looking for funding, planning a wedding, teaching and trying to get the acting career moving again all take time and there are only twenty-four hours each day.  I was up at 5:30 this morning and very active and still couldn’t accomplish as much as I wanted.

I am, however, really liking my new “To Do List for the week” thing that I’m doing!  It’s keeping me on task and gives me a good idea for how things are shaping up.  I just wish it wouldn’t fill up so quickly!

Here’s today’s pic:

This is the skin of a dog toy that was mauled and gutted.  I think it might make a fine pair of slippers.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 7-9-2010 Red Carpet

Even though I haven’t been on anything new since 2006 I can still be considered a bit of a minor celebrity so from time to time it happens that I am invited to events that involve a red carpet.  Tonight Rene and I went to see the premiere of a new comedy called Stan.  I was actually there to support a new project that I can’t speak on yet (there’s still stuff to work out which, by the way, is becoming my least favorite thing in general with all projects right now) and so there are photographs of me floating around the internet.

The premiere was held at The Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater off of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood.  Because it is owned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences there are Oscar statues everywhere!  Today’s picture of me next to one of them:

I’m not going to talk too much about the red carpet itself because there isn’t really all that much to talk about: you get your picture taken, somebody is usually taking video, the pictures end up on Wire Image and, if you’re news worthy, news outlets buy them.  It’s the vibe of the red carpet that is the interesting, if not completely depressing, part.

I’m going to try and talk about this as evenly and objectively because it is really easy for me to get flippant and glib and really snatchy when it comes to the over-all feeling at a red carpet.  With the exception of the people who are supposed to be at an event (cast and crew mostly) everyone else there who is hoping to get on the carpet is pretty much looking for publicity.  This includes both the people you would expect want publicity (celebrities) and those you’ve never heard of (wannabes).  Going forward I should make it very aware that I am NOT above these classifications.  For you “Sabrina” fans out there I might still be a celebrity, but to most of the rest of the world I pretty much fall into “wannabe” land.  I get it, I know it and because my lively hood isn’t completely dependent on everybody knowing who I am (although, frankly, it wouldn’t hurt) I’m just a little more immune to the effects of the carpet, if being immune means feeling REALLY out of place.  The worst thing about the carpet is the sense of desperation that permeates the air.  It really throws off the vibe of the whole room.  There are people who are there strictly to become famous no matter what the cost.  Let me be clear – the people I am talking about are not looking for artistic worth or to make a statement they want to be famous, just famous, and will go to virtually any length to achieve that goal.  It’s been a while since I’ve been on a carpet and it’s an easy thing to forget when you haven’t seen it in a while.  It really makes me uncomfortable and it sparks really awful instincts – instincts that the cattiest gossip monger would be proud of.  Of course being catty is just a defense mechanism.  There but for the grace of God go I should I ever take my eye off the ball.

The lie of fame is enough to blind even the most noble or intelligent of people.  It’s claimed more people than anyone would want to admit and it is showing no signs of slowing down.  As I stepped back into this aspect of the career I do it with a clearer head than I had over a decade ago when it seemed easier to do.  Thinking about it as a means to an end rather than as the end itself is a good way not to fall victim and I’m really glad to have Rene around to help keep me grounded.  All that being said it’s possible that there are going to be more of these events in my near future.  Hopefully all the work that is going into the project-that-cannot-be-named will pay off and I won’t be so out of place.  Even if it doesn’t it was nice to get back on the carpet again, warts and all.  Next time I’m getting Rene in pictures too, if she doesn’t mind.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 6-26-2010 Amber’s Batchelorette Party

My friend Amber is getting married and she’s a member Improv Shmimprov so a bunch of us boys came together for her batchlorette party and did our best to give her a great last night as a single woman!

We played marriage-centric improv games and she wore a tutu.

Nate did a strip tease…

…with fishnets and a corset.

He also smuggled a sausage in his pants.

It was very funny.

Ryan Clark and I had to mime Olympic luge and it looked like this:

The last one is, technically, the pic for today.

Project 365 6-9-2010 Auditions & Stuff

Meetings in L.A. in the morning and that lasted until about 2:30.  There are a lot of really good opportunities out there right now but even the good ideas are struggling to get money.  I vacillate between being extraordinarily frustrated and inspired.  It makes me sleepy.

I also think I might be able to make a career of just making sizzle reels, just booked two more of those.

On the actor side, I’ve been a little lax since boldly making the statement that I was reclaiming my acting career – but I have been auditioning a lot more and that’s REALLY nice!  Today was a commercial audition for Best Buy and we got to have a lot of fun pretending to be in a box.  In a apprapo(sp?) coincidence I had a conversation with one of my private students on Tuesday about read vs. look.  He was prepping a practice scene and said with a bit of defeat in his voice, “So it’s like 10% how I read this and the other 90% is my look, isn’t it?”  This is the great actor excuse.  I’ve used it, you’ve used it – we’ve all used it.  It makes you feel better about losing a job when you feel like you can say, “oh they went another way – clearly I was good enough but my hair color/eye color/height/weight/whatever was wrong.”

Probably not.

As I told my student, there is always going to be a certain level of “look” in every audition and it is impossible you you to know how much that is going to play into the final decision.  You have no way of changing what you fundamentally look like so it is your job to go in as prepared as possible with the things that you can control: your read, your character and your demeanor in the room.  Don’t stress about anything else.  Hell, they called you in based on a picture that they’ve already seen.  If they didn’t like your look they didn’t need to call you!

Oddly enough I walked into the audition room yesterday and the first thing the other guys said in the lobby was, “It’s all about the look, no lines.  I don’t know why they don’t just cast these without an audition.”  Suddenly I had to take my own advice.  Knowing there were no lines actually makes the acting harder.  There’s nothing to say that you can play off of so it’s all about what you do and there’s a very thin line between what will work and what is over doing it.  The audition was really loose and all soundless improv so I just let my imagination run – we had a lot of fun!  Excuses take away your power and there are plenty of people trying to do that to you, especially in this business, so it’s a horrible idea to do it to yourself.  If Hollywood has taught me anything it’s that results matter and excuses don’t.  Today I made results in the face of excuses and that felt good.

Today’s pic is of me by the sign for the studio:

Project 365 5-25-2010 T.C.O.B.

As you’ve probably noticed these blogs are REALLY late.  I’m going to pretend that I’m writing on Tuesday.

I like Tuesdays.  Tuesdays don’t have the stank of Mondays or the dull of Wednesdays and it gives you enough time to get more work done before the end of the week.

Zeke and I had a really good Tuesday.  We got to meet with our production partners from the East Coast, Hayden 5, and discuss Cheerleaders Must Die!  This is going to be a really fun project!

After that I had an audition and ran into an old college friend whom I haven’t seen in at least five years, we got to audition together!

Class was even surprisingly easy tonight (the five year olds were miraculously well behaved!).

Oh, but there was one little, itsy, bitsy problem.: I’m sick.

Here’s today’s picture:

See you tomorrow.

Project 365 5-20-2010

As you’ve probably noticed these blogs are REALLY late.  I’m going to pretend that I’m writing on Thursday.

Woke up.

Took Frankie to the vet at 7am.  He had a growth that needs to be removed.  More on that later.

Went to baby sit my nephews.

Went to an audition.  That went really well!  Got really lucky and found a parking spot right in front of the building with over an hour left on the meter!  It was pretty cool and a VERY rare treat in L.A.  Today’s picture is of the building:

Then I went to pick up Frankie and found out that the growth was much bigger than we thought, it went deep beneath the skin and now he has a three inch scar on his neck.  I’d show a picture but it’s just too sad.  We’re calling him Frankie-stien until he heals.

See you tomorrow!
