Project 365 8-24-2010 Lack of Subject.

There were things happening today, but nothing that made a good picture.

I was up early – That’s not a good picture.

I did a HUGE amount of data entry – Not a good picture.

Rene and I completed the family ceremony guest list for the October ceremony – Not a good picture.

My nose bled – Not a good picture.

When you have a project where you require yourself to take a picture every day it sucks to have days like this where there isn’t anything cool to take a picture of.

So I took a picture of my parent’s dog, Pete, as he stared blankly at me:

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-20-2010 Great Day &The Dog

GREAT DAY TODAY!  Just great!  It seems like my best meetings happen on Mondays and Fridays and this week totally followed that pattern.

Even better than the business possibilities is the fact that I’m that much closer to achieving my goal of being 100% out of ALL debt in less than five years!  It feels to good to be on this road.

Originally the picture for today was of the Hollywood sign, since all of my good news came while I was in Hollywood, but the picture sucked so I decided to use this:

Frankie loves chasing bubbles and I think that the bubble guns we got for the elopement may be his favorite new toy!

Sorry for not being more descriptive about details regarding work and stuff, but it just isn’t appropriate to list that stuff here… yet.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-19-2010 The Dog.

I forgot to write this blog on the 19th.  Because of that I really don’t remember much about the day.  I looked back at the calendar to remind myself but it was pretty bland – I was mostly in the car traveling from one meeting to the next and since I don’t have much of a memory of that day I’m figuring that not much noteworthy stuff happened.

Anyway, when I got home the dog was so happy to see he that he fell asleep on the floor:

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-12-2010 Crepes & A Cut

Had a bit of a change in plans, which is never bad as far as I’m concerned.

Unless it is bad, then it’s very upsetting.

But today was not upsetting, it was exciting!  Since my morning was suddenly free I visited my friend Dean’s house where he was hosting a brunch which consisted of crepes, both sweet and savory, and roasted potatoes and coffee and mimosas.

I’m not a very big fan of mimosas, but the coffee was very good, as was the food and so was the company!  Had the extra bonus of seeing a filmmaker friend of mine unexpectedly!  We were able to talk shop and swap some contacts, always nice to do.  And I got my haircut.

But the highlight of my day that wasn’t connecting with good friends was when I got a picture text from my director Zeke:

Apparently the Wiggy logo is making the rounds!

Project 365 8-9-2010 Judge, Jury & Jailer

I am a prisoner.

You are a prisoner.

We are all prisoners and our prison is one that we cannot ever escape that binds us in chains that never give.

Our jailer?  Time.

Time never stops, does not care for your excuses and never shows mercy.  Conversely time does not make considerations based on sex or creed and proceeds at a set rate, never changing.  But still there is only so much time per day and no matter what you do you can never create more or sweet talk it into sticking around.  Time moves on, time does not wait and time will leave you behind if you are not caught up.

Time is a bitch and sometimes I feel like it is laughing at me!

I am so grateful for how things are progressing right now: I’m getting married to a wonderful girl, business is (finally) picking up and my plan to be completely out of all debt is coming together in ways I did not expect, but there is a lot to do and time management, as I’ve discussed before, continues to be my biggest struggle.  I’ve taken the only step that I can to ensure that I have more time during business hours and that is to wake up earlier – significantly earlier – which, thus far, has helped.

But time is a cruel judge and even on days when I feel very productive the check list never seems to have enough ticks off of it.  So I saw this:

I saw it as the wooden avatar of time ignoring me.

That bastard!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-5-2010 Is it an addiction if everyone uses it?

What is the most terrifying thing that can happen to a person who’s business relies on the internet?

The whole of the internet crashing in the middle of the day!

THE WHOLE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A close second is when your connection to the internet randomly drops in the middle of sending an email to a client, which is a hell of a lot more likely and happened to me today.

See that little yellow triangle?  That’s not good.  Still not sure what happened, it just dropped and all the phones went dead.  There were a few options that sprung to mind and so this is what I imagine might have happened:

  1. They are putting a new roof on the house and it is possible that the workers accidentally unplugged or damaged a wire or connector somewhere.
  2. AT&T were doing maintenance on the switch box at the end of the street and, for whatever reason, disengaged the line(s).
  3. Aliens, experimenting with human behavior like in an old episode of “The Twilight Zone,” decided to test my reaction to losing the internet connection.

I think the third is the most obvious answer.  When the connection dropped I was stunned into non-action.  I clicked on the little internet bars, checked the network, ran tests… all the things that you learn in Internet 101 that you should do if things go non-responsive.  Once I exhausted the “on computer” options I went to the modem and started fooling with that.  That’s when I saw the red flashing light – the DSL connection was gone!

That made me panic a bit – I don’t know how to fix a problem in the walls – so I checked the phone and it was tone-less.

That’s when my right eye twitched and I got very annoyed.

I asked the workmen if they had noticed any wires while they were working, they hadn’t.

I really didn’t know what else to do so I called AT&T and tried to get someone on the phone to report the outage.  Turns out they don’t do the whole “people-on-the-phone” thing anymore so I talked to a very nice computer simulation of a person who took my report and then scheduled an appointment for workman to come out – NEXT WEEK!

What was I gonna’ do for a week without the internet?!!?!?

I went right to my phone and resigned myself to the idea that it would be my computer for the next week as I waited.  Then I started thinking about places with WI-FI that i could work at – but it’s really hard to do business calls at a Starbucks, especially when you aren’t drinking coffee (the baristas start to talk).  I left the house to do errands bitching via Twitter and in texts to friends and loved ones about how my day was suddenly ruined from lack of internet and it made me realize – as it has several times before – just how easy it is to take all the information that we have access to at all times for granted.

By the time I got home whatever was wrong was suddenly fixed.  Facebook updated, the email I had been trying to send was sent and suddenly my buffer speeds on YouTube were faster, but for about two hours I felt like a caveman.

Am I addicted?  And if you said “no” is it possible that you’re addicted too and just don’t want to admit it?  Or is it OK since I use the internet for my business?  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-4-2010 Business Lunch Shows Me Art

You know what I got to eat today for lunch?

A lobster Cobb salad.

You know why I had a lobster Cobb salad?

Because my meeting was in Bel Air and in Bel Air you are either the Fresh Prince or you eat a Cobb salad with a sea spider in it.

It is one of the benefits of my job that I get to do things like this.  Sure it’s frustrating, it’s nearly impossible to get anything financed and occasionally you run into some of the most UN-scrupulous people the world can offer, but a nice lunch with like minded individuals can make it all worth it.  Two of the finance guys that I met with today got their start as physicists – I had a meeting with rocket scientists who ended up in finance.  Apparently it’s not uncommon since it is easy for rocket scientists to do complicated math in their heads.  It was facinating.  We had an enlightening conversation about distribution and some new ideas about where to get financing for my projects (which was nice) and as we sat there I was in the correct seat to see this piece of art:

That fluffy thing is a dog and, yes, they are sharing a noodle.  Very Lady and the Tramp in a species co-mingling kind of way.  I saw this painting and first thought, “this has probably happened in this restaurant.”  My second thought was, “we are only a million dollars away from Rene and Frankie doing the same thing.”

Maybe not even a million dollars, might just be ten bucks.

Or a saw buck.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-2-2010 Delays, Excuses, Etc.

There was a four day delay on the blog posts, sorry about that.  This is turning into a bad habit.  This time there was a better reason than usual, Rene is going through an ISP switch and so we didn’t have internet all weekend except via phone.

Honestly I’m also really starting to feel the crunch time wise. Looking for funding, planning a wedding, teaching and trying to get the acting career moving again all take time and there are only twenty-four hours each day.  I was up at 5:30 this morning and very active and still couldn’t accomplish as much as I wanted.

I am, however, really liking my new “To Do List for the week” thing that I’m doing!  It’s keeping me on task and gives me a good idea for how things are shaping up.  I just wish it wouldn’t fill up so quickly!

Here’s today’s pic:

This is the skin of a dog toy that was mauled and gutted.  I think it might make a fine pair of slippers.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 7-30-2010 The Hosting

I hosted a corporate event today at The Grove Theater in Anaheim.  Hosting is one of the many things that I do that I really enjoy doing.  It doesn’t take up a whole day, the people are usually in a good mood and my job is usually just to make the day more fun!  Who wouldn’t want to do that?

I’m having a really hard time coming up with anything else to write right now.  There are so many things that I really should be doing that I’m going to jump right to the picture:

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 7-27-2010 Holy Crap! July is almost over!

Where the hell did the summer go?  I know that in the past I’ve been inclined to talk about how fast time seems to pass, but this summer has truly gone by in a relative flash and it’s blowing my mind!  The last two days have not had enough hours on the day to do what I’ve wanted to do.  My to do list for the week just keeps getting longer and in spite of my best efforts it’s not shrinking fast enough.  It doesn’t help that I have four different bureaucracies on the list that I’m hesitant to call just because I know that each with take about an hour and the conversation will be amazingly dull.

Ah!  I just discovered that two of the four can be taken care of with forms.  Forms I can do!  Forms come with instructions and can be done after business hours!  After business hours is good for me.

I really want to write more but I’m exhausted.  I’ll finish with today’s picture:

That’s nephew Dylan in the pool.  I was able to go to the pool for an hour today with my sister and her kids and when we got there I realized that this was the first summer water activity that I had actually had all summer!  Crazy!

See you tomorrow!
