Fun Video Friday – 3 Minutes with Curtis & Dean – Doctor Who

Today’s fun video is a re-post of one of the most popular episodes of  “3 Minutes with Curtis & Dean” where we discuss Doctor Who.

My history with Doctor Who is a long one, and one I don’t really get to go into in the video. I started watching with my dad back before we moved away from Wisconsin. I have a clear memory of PBS, and the Thames logo (tried to find it on YouTube, no luck), and the theme song which is still one of my favorites along with the Airwolf theme. I remember my dad explaining that he was a time lord who time traveled in a phone booth. That was good enough for me and we watched.

I started with the Tom Baker years and I saw the episodes when he changed and had my first, “This isn’t my doctor!” moment at age 6. I still can’t watch Peter Davidson episodes. He’ll always be the Doctor that destroyed the scarf. In his first full episode I kept waiting for the moment when Tom Baker would be back and all would be right with the world. All I knew about regeneration was that he didn’t die, this whole “new face/new personality” thing drove me nuts.

So I stopped watching.

I missed the Peter Davidson years and I missed the Colin Baker years, but then I found it again on PBS.

By now Sylvester McCoy had taken over and I REALLY liked his version of the Doctor. By then I was the ripe old age of 12 and far more capable of understanding the complexities of a Time Lord’s life. Also, McCoy’s Doctor traveled with Ace, and I thought she was a badass, even if all I can ever remember her saying is “I’ll go make some nitro!” Seriously, she talked about it so much there are songs about it, here’s one of them. The McCoy years get a lot of flack for their budgets, they were even lower than a normal season of Doctor Who before 2005, but I remember the writing being good. And they constantly replayed the episode with the water vampires.

So when the U.S. movie hit I was very excited that they got McCoy back and very disappointed in how “American” the movie ended up being. When the new series started in 2005, well, I was addicted all over again. And have been ever since.

Enjoy the video and let me know in the comments about shows from your childhood. Were you a Whovian? All about G.I. Joe? Get all sentimental right here on the page.

See you next time!

Creativity and Time

I can safely call myself a producer now. For a long time I believe I was an actor who was producing, but now my time is definitely spent more in a producer role than as an actor. There are pros and cons to this, most I don’t really want to go into right now, but the biggest change that I’ve noticed, especially the last couple days, is that I don’t have the time to solve the creative problems that have been popping up.

I guess “problems” is the wrong word, they’re more like “issues.”  Things with CMD!, the documentary, the other development projects and Wiggy Webs are really starting to push forward, but as things ramp up the time that I feel comfortable dedicating to the creative side keeps shrinking.  There’s just too much business to do.  I find myself excited when I have to go to the store because it means I don’t have to review another invoice or re-do a budget.  Don’t get me wrong, people pray for my problems but I miss the days of sitting in front of this computer and just making up stories whether good or bad.

I think that, once a few of the current projects get far enough along I’ll be able to dedicate myself to the creative more, but in the mean time I’ll be negotiating with myself about when I’m going to pull out a CMD! re-write and review a new script or two.

These are such first world problems.  I suddenly feel very guilty even writing about it.

See you tomorrow!  Warts and all!

Project 365 7-21-2010 It is DONE!

Stuff happened today, blah, blah, blah…

None of that matters because today – after all kinds of wondering and changes of plans – we have a wedding plan that we can afford and is what we actually want!  Details later, I’m pooped.

Today’s picture is of one of the more ridiculous moments from Tom Baker’s time as Doctor Who that I found while reading my movie news:

Yes, that’s a minotaur.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 5-17-2010 At Audition & Forgot to Take A Picture

As you’ve probably noticed these blogs are REALLY late.  I’m going to pretend that I’m writing on Monday.

Woke up early.

Had an audition.

I meant to take a picture of the waiting room, but I forgot.  I also think it’s a bit weird to take pictures in a waiting room full of nervous actors.

Instead I took a picture later when I was at Dean’s house watching “Doctor Who.”

It’s of Diet Coke:

I don’t usually drink Diet Coke but my need for caffeine and sugar was high so I gave in and drank it.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 5-10-2010

Had some man time last night, geeky man time.  Dean and I got together and watched some Doctor Who, we had a couple of episodes to catch up on and a few Doctor Who Confidentials (those are the behind-the-scenes shows) as well.  I’ve been enjoying the Steven Moffatt episodes so far, but I’m a little disappointed in how he uses the sonic screwdriver.

I… I actually just over geeked myself by writing that.

Anyway, we had man food to go along with our man night: Wing Stop.

Boneless lemon pepper wings, but that’s still manly, right?

Man the more I write the more this isn’t feeling like such a manly night.

We ordered the wings online and it was the first time I’d ever done something like that so I thought that was pretty cool.  Here’s the picture:

See you tomorrow.

Project 365 1-3-2010 The End of an Era – Doctor Who Style

Keeping in line with yesterday’s post, my geekness knows no bounds, and today I witnessed a sad thing in the world of geekdom – the end of David Tennant’s run as The Doctor on Doctor Who.  It is also the end of Russell T. Davies run as Executive Producer on the show.  It is truly an end of an era.

I have been a Whosian since I was a small child and watched re-runs of Tom Baker episodes on PBS with my dad.  Even as a four year old I knew that the effects were cheesy and the acting left the scenery chewed to bits, but there has always been a magic with the show, as any fan can tell you and there are plenty of them the whole world over.  Imagine the best parts of Star Trek and Star Wars all combined and then shot on a shoe string budget – voila! That’s Doctor Who!

The series ended back in 1989 in less than stellar style.  Sylvester McCoy, the 7th Doctor, was another favorite of mine, but there were limited episodes and the writing near the end of the series was ungood.  The 7th Doctor reappeared in the failed US TV movie backdoor pilot back in 1995, but it wasn’t until 2005 that we got a real “regeneration” of the series (that’s an inside joke).  Russell T. Davies brought back the magic of what I and so many others like me loved about the series from childhood, but added today’s modern special F/X capabilities that helped raise the production level of the show.  That, combined with his reverence for over 40 years of show history, lead to a re-launch that Who fans both new and old could get attached to, and we did!  For four seasons we watched as the Doctor, in two different forms, raced through time and space saving the innocent and doing his best as the last Time Lord in the universe.  With Davies at the wheel Who fans could watch with confidence that their hero would be in good hands.

New Years Day that promise ended.  Now we have a new Doctor – The 11th Doctor Matt Smith – and a new EP, Steven Moffat, at the helm guiding the series.  Part of me is really excited for a new direction for the show, but another part of me is terrified that some of the magic that has kept the show so good may fall away.  Thus my concerned look in the picture.  I guess we’ll find out in the spring.

BTW: If some of that was “greek” to you, and I’m sure to some of you it was, please check out DOCTOR WHO ON WIKIPEDIA.  It’s a great primer on all things Who.

See you tomorrow!

Doctor Who!!!

Those of you who read my profile pages on different social networking sites will know that I love me some Doctor Who! this is kind of a messy year for the Who mythology with one of it’s greatest Doctors (David Tennant) leaving and being replaced by a much younger actor (Matt Smith). Instead of a normal season this year they are doing five special episodes spread out over the year.

They have already released the first one: Planet of the Dead!

Here’s a trailer:

Aside from Tom Baker, David Tennant has been my favorite Doctor. He plays the role with such child-like enthusiasm one minute and then can turn on a dime the next and be brooding, sharp and terrifying. The rumor mill has run rampant with who is coming back this season, what the stories will revolve around and which classic enemies will make their return. If the last few years have proven anything, though, it’s that the rumor mill is usually full of it and for every fact that actually makes it out of the BBC production offices there are thirty “red herrings” mucking up the water. We’ll see what eventually makes it to the screen.

Speaking of seeing, I need to get over to Tortuga now and see about getting this episode…

See you tomorrow!
