Project 365 5-2-2010 Dog Face Fur

I run the risk of having a few too many of my blogs this year being about my dog, but the joy that we get from Frankie has been described by parents as the same that they feel for their children.  Until you meet him I think it is hard to understand the level of personality and expression that he shows in his face.  There are times when you can tell that he is communicating with you pretty clearly and I know that other equally nutty dog parents can relate to the fact that once you really know your dog you really can communicate in a very rudimentary kind of way.

Frankie knows how to let us know he’s hungry, would like a walk, that he’s ready for bed and when he doesn’t like what’s on T.V.  Yes, he does watch T.V., but not a lot.  He prefers shows that include animals, especially pet food commercials.  He also likes shows that include whistling.  While I haven’t tested this theory I’m pretty sure that the end credits of “The Andy Griffith Show” might be his favorite thing in the world.  He doesn’t have sophisticated taste, but most television audiences don’t either.

His favorite show, really, is “Looking Out the Front Window.”  It’s not on T.V., that’s what he does.  He sits on his daybed and looks out the front window at all the things going on.  He likes to watch the gardeners mow the lawn and trim things and he really pays attention when school lets out and the high school kids walk by with their purple highlights and skinny jeans.  I was with him this morning as he was watching cars pass.  Every once in a while I join him on that daybed and try to see the world the way he does.  So far I don’t find it nearly as interesting, but my senses work differently what with my color vision and significantly diminished sense of smell and hearing.  But today, as he was intently looking at things I couldn’t see, I got a chance to really look at his face in the sun.  I started looking at the detail of how the fur grew on his face and how his skin reacted to the turns of his head and the twitch of his ears.  There was a lot of action going on beneath the surface during his simple action of looking at the world.  This theme carried through to class today as I worked with some of my older students about the subtleties of multiple emotions in acting, how it isn’t just “I’m happy” or “I’m sad” but “I’m happy, but conflicted and frustrated,” or something like that.

The devil may be in the details, but so is inspiration and, if you’re willing to see it, a bit of wonder.  Being that close to Frankie and seeing all that work under the skin made me look at my face closely, see the reaction of my eyes to light, involuntary reactions of my eyebrows and the tracks of the forming wrinkles around my eyes.  It’s all like clock pieces moving together.  These aren’t new discoveries, I have memories of my teachers in school telling me to do this kind of observation but I didn’t care then or have the capacity to really appreciate it.  Today I did.

Today’s picture is of Frankie’s face when he wanted to be asleep:

Project 365 4-26-2010

Now that Rene has a jobby-job I am the one primarily with Frankie for most of the day, working from home has its advantages.  But now that I’m spending so much time with him I’m finding it really hard to leave when I have to go places.  To alleviate that a bit I took him with me as I did my errands yesterday!  He was so excited when we first left the house.  He wanted to know where we were going and what we were going to do when we got there and who he would see.  He really perked up when he saw that we were going to my parent’s house where his puppy cousins, Abby and Pete, live.

They had a pretty typical puppy play-date: running, barking, napping, etc.  On the way back home he slept like a baby all curled up in the front seat, only popping his head up to see if we were home yet.  After a day of phone calls, emails and downloads it’s nice to remember that it’s the simple things, like Frankie playing with his puppy cousins, that really makes a day memorable.

Today’s picture is me and Frankie after we finally got home:

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 4-19-2010 Frankie the Radical

Apparently my dog has been reading the rants that I’ve posted lately about politics here in the blog and on my Twitter feed because he decided to make his political opinion very plain.

Frankie is a really good dog with one bad habit: he thinks that the mail coming through the slot is trying to kill him.  When the mail comes through the slot he grabs at it and pulls it through to make sure that he “kills” it before it kills him.  This leads to little holes in the bills and chewed pages of magazines.  He has no quarrel with the mailman.  When we open up the door and he sees the mailman his tail wags and he licks his hand and is generally excited to see him.  And if we just show Frankie` the mail he does not feel threatened and does not attack it.  It’s all in the delivery through the slot that gets him going.

We have made great strides to keep him from attacking the mail.  It took a while, and the threat of a wapping from a rolled up news paper, to get him to go to his bed when the mail was delivered.  As long as there are people around he is now very good about not attacking the mail.  If we aren’t home there’s a 50/50 shot that the mail will be punctured by the time we get to it.  Then today I got home from the gym and the mail had been delivered while I was out.  Most of the mail was just fine, all of it actually except this:

Our picture for today is Frankie’s response to a political mailing.  It is the only piece of mail he damaged and I thought it was funny.  The only other time he has done this was when we got a mailing from PETA, who have an incredibly ignorant policy against pit bulls.  I’m now pretty sure that Frankie is taking after his Mom and Dad on the political front with our complete distaste for all career politicians.  He may become the leader of the Brindle Puppy Party (get it?  Instead of the Black Panther Party?).

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 4-13-2010

Spent most of the day on the phone trying to tie up loose ends and get all the current business handled and solidified.  Still working on that.  I understand that when you’re talking about millions of dollars it is important to dot all the “i”s and cross all the “t”s, but, seriously, can we please get this going a little quicker?

Wedding planning, on the other hand, is off like a rocket!  We have our venue, Rene has ordered her dress, the rehearsal dinner is set up and there is so much talk about flowers, bride’s maid dresses, groom’s men ties and DJ’s that I’ve actually lost track – but I trust I will be informed when I need to know things.

Today’s picture is of Frankie yawning:

It took two attempts to get this shot, but in the end I think it was worth it.  When Frankie yawns he yawns with his whole body and he’s super cute!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 3-31-2010

Had more meetings today, spent most of the day in an office with a lot of coffee and a few bagels going over movie and show pitches and talking about money.  Very interesting stuff… that I can’t go public with.  Sorry, but it was good.

Then I went to see Rene and discuss more wedding stuff.  Oh, and, due to a lost set of keys, Rene and I cleaned out her car.  She had SO MUCH STUFF in there!

Today’s picture is one that Rene sent me while I was having a business/catch-up dinner with an old friend:

I love that boy!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 3-7-2010

Sunday. Oscar day. The Super Bowl of the entertainment world.  Prom night for celebrities.  A  big pat on the back for a job well done in the movie biz.

It is also amazingly political, can be childish, and reminds me an awful lot of high school.  Tonight winners will be announced, a dance number or two will be danced and six or seven people’s price quotes will raise dramatically.  If I sound cynical I don’t mean to, at least not entirely.  There are things about this business that can leave you jaded pretty quick and when you start to know too much about what is in the “hotdog” it becomes less appetizing.  That being said, if I were nominated for an Oscar I’d be all smiles on the red carpet gushing my little heart out and happy as a clam!  It’s a part of my personal hypocrisy.

In order to avoid sounding too much like an ass I’m turning to the pic of the day:

This is how I found Frankie sleeping this morning.  That’s my boy.

Project 365 2-16-2010 Chillin’ With My Boy.

I love my boy.  I love him very much.  He is amazing and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for him.  Today I got to spend the day with my boy all by ourselves.  He came with me as I worked.  He played with his cousins.  We got to go for a long walk around my parent’s neighborhood.  It was as fun a day as it was productive.  More proof that working from home is the only way to fly!

Today’s picture is of he and I on the couch relaxing before bed.

His mom will be back tomorrow and I’ll go back to working by myself, but today was a great day and I’m glad we got to spend some quality time together.

See you tomorrow!

Power to the Pit Bulls!

In an ongoing effort to make sure the whole country doesn’t legislate against my dog here are some fun quotes and a great informational website.

Quit punishing my dog because of stupid irresponsible people!

Pit bulls are famous, in circles of knowledgeable dog people, for the love and loyalty they bestow on anyone who shows them a smidgen of kindness.
–Linda Wilson-Fuoco, journalist

In my opinion, Pit bulls are the least likely to be human aggressive. On the whole, you have to do a lot of work to make them aggressive to people.
–Sue Frisch, Dessin Animal Shelter manager

Pit bulls are especially good at pleasing people since they are strong and smart, they learn quickly and they are very adaptable.”

Bad Rap

As many of you know Rene and I have a pit bull, Frankie, whom we love very much. He is a wonderful dog who is a member of a breed of dog that is unfairly persecuted due to the poor owners. We do a great deal to help re-educate people about the facts regarding, not just pit bulls but also dog attacks in general and why responsible pet ownership is so important.

To continue that trend Rene has shared a new blog with me that I think is worth sharing along with the following video.

Dogs are dogs. They were all bred with something in mind. Let’s not forget that poodles were bred as hunting dogs, wiener dogs as a way to chase rats and other small rodents and bull dogs to, literally, help wrangle bulls.

Here is the blog BadRap

And here’s the video:

Enjoy!

See you tomorow!

Frankie the Wonderdog

I love my dog. He is one of the best dogs I have ever met. He is friendly and gentle he’s excited and playful and he doesn’t even conceive of hurting another living being. He chases bugs but does not eat them. He plays with very small children hoping to God that they will drop whatever food they are holding but never taking any from their hands. He is 47 pounds and his best friends are dogs that weigh under 10 pounds. The closest Frankie has ever come to attacking anyone is when he licks you, although he will lick you until you are drenched in dog slobber. Frankie is the best dog in the world!

Frankie is a pit bull.

I saw a report on Fox News yesterday and today raving about a “Pit Bull Attack!” It was the most sensationalized. fear mongering piece of yellow journalism that I had seen in a while – that is until I saw the next story claiming that a woman was “almost mauled” by a polar bear when she decided to jump into their enclosure. All of the people and animals involved in these “attacks” were fine. No one was hurt and at worst, while the videos might look scary, the folks involved got a few scrapes for being stupid. Yep, you heard me, the PEOPLE were being STUPID! Who jumps into a POLAR BEAR ENCLOSURE?!?!? Who does that and is then surprised when the polar bears want to play with you? I saw the video – if those bears had wanted to hurt that woman she never would have left that enclosure alive. They mostly stared at her and then just kind of batted at her. Could have been eaten, wasn’t. Why wasn’t the story about how the polar bears showed a remarkable amount of restraint – or, even better, what are the effects of zoos on wild animals that the polar bears had not only no fear of humans but seemed to want to play with her?

As far as the the pit bulls, the owners of BOTH dogs should have known better. Neither owner had their dogs on leashes. Responsible dog ownership is really the biggest problem when it comes to ANY dog related problem. I swear people should have to take a friggin’ test to be able to get a dog. When the pit bulls saw the smaller dog they didn’t maul it – far from – they ran up to it and tried to play. Sure the little dog was scared, but when all was said and done it WALKED AWAY WAGGING ITS TAIL! The only people who got hurt were the owners who STUCK THEIR HANDS IN THE DOG’S MOUTHS! That is a poor choice no matter what dog it is! And what happened? Is the owner of the pit bulls going to be charged with any kind of violent crime? Are the dogs being sought for termination? No, the owner is going to be charged with negligence and another fancy term for not having the dogs on a leash. Two tickets!

I am so sick of pit bulls getting blamed for every damn attack that happens. I thought about posting some terrible, terrible pictures of dog attacks – all of which where the victim died – that happen more often then any pit bull attack, but I did not want to stoop to the level of the network news by vilifying any other breeds. Instead I’m going to post these two Wikipedia articles about Pit Bulls in general and American Pit Bull Terriers, which is Frankie’s breed. Did you know that pit bulls used to be considered “nanny dogs” because how good they are with children? Many pits were given medals and considered heroes in World War I and World War II.

One of the things that really gets me upset, and Rene as well while we’re on the topic, is Breed Specific Legislation. These are laws that regulate what kinds of dogs are legal in different places, not just in the United States but all over the world. Pits are unfairly discriminated against with these laws. Follow the link to learn more.

Discrimination is wrong no matter if it’s race, gender, age or dog breed. I encourage all of you to educate yourselves. Pit bulls are some of the greatest pets anyone can have and it isn’t fair that a few assholes (i.e. Michael Vick) can ruin it all for a whole breed.
