Fun Video Friday – WhoLock, When Doctor Who met Sherlock

Here’s a fun video from YouTuber John Smith, the same guy who did the great 50th Anniversary Trailer way back before we knew anything. It tells the tale of two of the most interesting beings in the universe meeting for the first time – in the TARDIS! It is a pretty impressive bit of fan fic and a fun way to see two of Steven Moffat’s creations come together.

Enjoy!

You can see the VFX breakdown HERE.

See you next time.

Fun Video Friday – Judge Dredd with Puppets!

Being an independent filmmaker who has done his fair share of super low budget productions I always have an appreciation for getting special effects at a reasonable price. Back in the mid to late 2000’s I saw some of the early episodes of DIY Effects and really enjoyed them. I thought that these guys had vanished into the electronic soup of the internet – but no! They are now sponsored by Epix and still making DIY videos.

This one I particularly like because it has puppets. And it led me to watching Dredd which was a surprisingly good movie.

Fun Video Friday – The Five(ish) Doctors

As the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary buzz starts to wind down and the dust begins to settle from all the awesome that got put out, today’s Fun Video Friday focuses on a little bit of fun from the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson. He wrote and directed this short film about the classic Doctors trying to get involved in the 50th Anniversary episode.

Fair warning, a lot of the humor in this comes in the form of inside jokes that only die-hard Classic Whovians are likely to catch, but you tell me:

Fun Video Friday – Sallie The Heartland Ghost

I love a good ghost story.

If you have one I want to hear all about what you felt and what things moved and how the lights went on and off; yes tell me all about it – but I prefer if you have pictures and video. And I don’t mean just orbs or mist, I don’t care, show me the good stuff!

Back in 1993 the TV show Sightings had the good stuff. For about a year in 1993-1994 they covered a story called “The Heartland Ghost” where it seemed that a ghost of a young girl was haunting a house and terrorizing the man who lived there. So many things were caught on camera (as well as plenty of things off camera that are worth being skeptical about) that the story was revisited on more than 5 different occasions – including two web based episodes powered by AOL.

Yes, AOL.

I’m not saying this is definitive proof of anything, but today’s video is just about all of the Heartland Ghost episodes combined into one video:

Now, as I mentioned, this is by no means proof of anything. I do think that the stories presented in the Sightings episodes are, at least on the surface, presented in an honest way. But the Sallie story made minor celebrities out of Tony and Debra and they have continued to be associated with all things Sallie – including doing episodes of A Haunting and Paranormal Witness, both being programs that have been known to take liberties with the narratives they are sharing. To be fair, Tony and Debra have responded to how the editing was done on the Official Sallie House web site, in that they had no control over it, but it wasn’t until I saw the episode that I had ever heard that everything might be demonic or that there was a ghost of an old woman(?!?). Anyway, as a bonus here’s a quick peek at the Paranormal Witness version of the heat-sensing camera footage that you can see happen live in the Sightings footage. It’s pretty different and far more dramatic (surprise, surprise):

I couldn’t find a clip from A Haunting.

What do you think? I look forward to your thoughts!

See you next time!

Fun Video Friday – The Night of The Doctor

Yesterday a Doctor Who mini-sode was released featuring the greatly under-used Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor! I won’t spoil it, you should just watch it, but it makes me want more modern era 8th Doctor stories.

He’s very good.

And here’s a link for mobile users: The Night of the Doctor.

This gets me VERY excited for the 50th anniversary! After the 50th airs I may do a full geek out about my theories on the Time War – depending on what they show and explain.

Gah! So many things to geek out about!!!!! It will just have to wait.

See you next time.

Fun Video Friday – Sifl & Olly and The Tooth Fairy

Being a teenager in the 90’s meant that I had access to two of the funniest things ever to be played on MTV: The State and Sifl & Olly. I’ve mentioned The State before  but today I want to share with you a sketch that I still find very funny – Sifl & Olly Interview The Tooth Fairy.

I love everything about this: The design of The Tooth Fairy, the threats to call lawyers, and “I think you’re a cheap ho.”

Things were different in the 90’s, especially if you were a teenager with a penchant for the ridiculous. A few things haven’t aged as well for me, for example I used to think Ren and Stimpy was hysterical but now I find it almost un-watchable, but Sifl & Olly… This sketch always brings a smile to my face. It’s crescent fresh.

See you next time!

Fun Video Friday – The Lego Movie Trailer

I have LOVED Lego since I was eight years old.

I collected a massive amount of space Lego and created variation after variation of space craft. I grew up in the ’80’s when Lego was beginning it’s renaissance and moving beyond the simple “brick” and started adding tubes and special shapes that are now very common.

I still remember my favorite ship – it was two-pieces where the front could disengage from the back and the back became a base for your guys. I even found a picture!

Just writing this is putting me in happy-memory-land.

The kids of today have all kinds of cool new options and licenses of Lego (including the AVENGERS!!!!) and now they are getting a movie – and it looks really good! For today’s Fun Video Friday I present the trailer for The Lego Movie:

Fun Video Friday – A Relationship in 5 Minutes by Restless Short Films

I was introduced to this video by The Philip DeFranco Show on YouTube. It is a well made clip about dating.

I think that this is a great example of good storytelling that doesn’t require any fancy effects or even any sets, just two good actors telling us something that we can relate too.

Fun Video Friday – Tom Hiddleston, King of the Internet… and Owen Wilson as Loki impressions

Today’s Fun Video was picked because I’m helping to re-integrate a wayward geek back into the pop culture fold. As part of this I instructed him to visit Tumblr to learn about that site’s two favorite things: Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston.

So here is Tom Hiddleston doing Owne Wilson playing Loki in “The Avengers.”

You’re welcome.

Fun Video Friday – Revisiting the Commercial Archives: Hyundai

Seeing all the old episodes of Sabrina has gotten me nostalgic about some of the stuff I used to do in the 90’s. Lot’s of the commercials I did aren’t available on the internet, which stinks because some of them were hysterical (I was killed by a blow dart in a Coke Zero commercial) but one of them has survived!

A buddy of mine works with a high school marching band that performs on TV shows and commercials and they needed a comedy drum major to lead them.

I was that man.

Here are the full minute and thirty seconds version of that commercial:
