Bonus Video Blog: Apache O.G. & Oh No!

Two versions of the song “Apache” originally recorded by The Shadows. I’ve included their video from a TV appearance in 1960. The video after that is of another group who covered the song in the 70’s with some of the same spectacular dancing you have come to expect from the videos I’ve posted.

Enjoy!

Habits

Habits, sometimes it’s good to get into them. Like a writing habit, I’m enjoying the challenge that goes along with writing a blog everyday – even when it’s incredibly inconvenient and I occasionally fail at it. Then there’s the habit of saving money, which is a habit I only tend to get into when I’m running out of it.

Then there are those habits that are bad like nail biting, finger sniffing and nose picking. Eww.

Habits have been coming up an awful lot in my Adult acting class lately. We have quite a few new students and it’s a little like starting over as far as some of the acting basics. One of the first things that I do with them is break their bad acting habits: venting, picking, lack of focus and so on and so forth. This is usually a whole class (sometimes more than one) worth of mirror and body work and the results are completely worth it.

The funny thing about making other people confront their habits is that you start to see your own as well. After years of acting training I’ve become neurotically self aware, but just because you know you do something doesn’t mean that you know you do it ALL THE TIME! I try very hard to make sure that I’m doing the same work that my students do and when I started to notice what my habits are… It’s scary! Even though it was uncomfortable I ended up really glad to know, and thereby eliminate, a few of those habits. This really illustrated to me the need to really take a look at yourself every once in a while, both literally and figuratively. We’re always working on ourselves, sometimes we don’t even realize it. I doubt that any one of us is the same person we were even just a year ago. It’s neat to see that progress. Now I feel like I’m getting all “self-helpy” and rambling so I’m going to quit while I’m, perceivable, ahead.

The picture at the top has nothing to do with anything, one of my habits is nonsequitors.

See you tomorrow!

It was a little spanish flea in a Tijuana taxi having a Mexican breakfast.

“Tijuana Taxi” and “Spanish Flea.” These two songs caused a bit of a controversy today. I have been trying to remember how “Tijuana Taxi” goes for weeks, but I never remember to check when I’m actually at the computer – well today that changed. I often confuse “T.T.” with the melody for “Spanish Flea” and today, while I was printing out a proposal package, I played them both on YouTube. As it happens the rest of the group I was meeting with laughed at me for the “musical interlude.” I feel that Herb Alpert is under appreciated. The video for “T.T.” is, much like “Mexican Breakfast”, amazing! I love the way they used to do dancing videos in the 60’s. So I’m including these videos so you can share in my joy – even if everyone else I know thought I was weird today for spending so much time on it. I’m not weird, just particular and curious.

Thank you Wired, but you’re blowing my mind!

I’m 32 years old. I’m not afraid to admit it. I know when this posts I’ll hear the vacuum of the gasps of other actors who can’t believe that I’ve actually posted my real age somewhere that it can be found (thank God I’m not an actress – someone might go into cardiac arrest!). I’m proud to be as old as I am and, quite frankly, am still pretty young, but when I saw this list of 100 Things Your Kids May Never Know About I was blown away by how much has changed in the last twenty years!

You expect electronics to change – look at the differences between the Sony Walkman and the iPod – but when you think about how many cultural things have changed with “appointment television” being a thing of the past and how far the Internet has come!

Check it out, get your mind blown, and if you don’t know what their talking about you’re too young!

See you tomorrow!

The O.C. Fair

There aren’t many things that are like a county fair. No matter what part of the country you are in the fair is always pretty much the same. There are the scary carnival rides, scary more in their construction than in actual intended thrill, deep fried food ranging from Twinkies to funnel cake to hand dipped anything, and a variety of items on sale that you never really need, but at just that moment you can’t live without. Rene and I went to the Orange County Super Fair last week with our friends Julie and Erik and we did our best to have a “Fair” time.

Get it? That was a pun.

The pictures tell the story, I’ll fill in what might not be obvious.

We actually started out with a few things that did not get photographed, this included roasted corn, a veggie kabob, a fried chicken sandwich on a Krispy Kreme doughnut, a ham and Swiss and bacon sandwich, the Weird Al’s Brain Show and margaritas. The food was delightful, as well as heavy, the drinks were delightful, and Al’s Brain was fun but disappointingly short. We had a lot of fun looking at the factoids placed around the lobby. I found myself wishing that it had been a 4-D presentation and not just 3-D – but it was good. The super star cameos were worth the price of admission alone – however, considering that the price of admission was “free” maybe you actually came away with more than you may have bargained for. On to the pics!

Here’s me standing in front of one of many of the wonderful meat carts at the fair. Yes, they were cooking pork butts.

Erik and I got chocolate covered bacon. It tastes an awful lot like chocolate covered pretzels. The biggest complaint all around is that there is too much chocolate in the chocolate/bacon ratio. I enjoyed it, but wanted more of that wonderful bacon flavor.

Here are pics of Rene and Erik with a giant cow statue, doing what you do with a giant cow statue.

Here’s a pic of Rene in the Future Farmers of America photo display. I took a pic too, but it just won’t upload correctly.

Here Erik is eating a hand dipped corn dog – important when there are so many frozen corn dogs available, you wanna’ make sure you get yours made fresh.

Here are the ladies, Rene & Julie, in front of the “Queen of the Mummies” ride – or whatever it was called. We didn’t go on it, we just took a picture in front of it. Fair rides scare me and are expensive. It remains to be seen if I will go on any this year.

Here’s me eating a TWO FOOT SAUSAGE! It was delicious.

Here are Erik and I just before Erik’s food coma starts to get the better of him.

So, as his coma took hold, we decided to sit in the foot massage chairs – those are SOOOOOOO worth the quarter!

The ladies in front of the sunflowers. Aren’t they lovely?

By now we lost Erik, so the ladies and I did a wine tasting. Good stuff!

Here’s a picture that Erik got for his soon-to-be-born daughter, Lucy. Good choice, sir!

Every year Rene and I get photo booth photos from the fair, we’ve been doing it since we when we dated back in the day. These are thew photos from this year.

We had a lot of fun! There are a few more trips planned for this year and I’ll…

See you tomorrow!

Geez! No Time!

Time continues to elude me this weekend! Rene and I were at a good ol’ fashioned Crab Boil today and we ended up having such a good time that we stayed much longer than anticipated. I will have a good blog up again tomorrow and the rest of the week promises some fun content. But enough excuses, I’m going to bed!

Check me out on Twitter!

See you tomorrow!

God of War!

I don’t have a lot of free time right now. With all of the phone calls, writing and personal responsibilities it’s hard to have any time that can actually be called “extra,” but fate worked in a strange way the other day and I totally took advantage of it. My nephew is starting to learn how to play video games. Right now, at his age, they are extremely family interactive and he plays them with his mom (my sister) and his Mamma (my mom). His favorite game right now is a baseball game. Dylan has been to real games and, if only because his parents are big fans, loves the Angels! He is surprisingly good as a pitcher, better than the rest of us, but needs a little work on hit batting. He also got a video game for Disney’s “Cars.” He didn’t like that one at all. The whole concept of “steering” is still a little out of his grasp and he prefers the movie over the game so we decided to return it.

Now ideally I would have returned the game and gotten him something new to play – but the selections of appropriate game for him on the PS2 was not large so I got a bit selfish – I got a game for myself.

GOD OF WAR!

I first played this game way back when Corey, Jeff and I were all in the Casa de Divorce (my old saved game was even on my memory card). I helped Jeff beat it, but never got very far on my own game. Now that God of War 3 is on it’s way I felt like maybe it was time to do a little catch up.

God of War is a very cinematic game. It plays like a movie that you star in, which totally appeals to the actor in me. Taking inspiration from Greek Mythology, you play as Kratos, a jaded Spartan warrior in the service of the Gods. He is tasked by Athena to kill Ares, the God of War. For more details on the plot I will send you to the God of War Wikipedia page.

I played a little bit the day I got it (since my internet connection was down) and remember now why it’s such a fun game. I’m not sure when I’ll get a chance to play next, but I’m looking forward to sending the undead back to Hades!

So now I get back to work emailing packages and making calls, sure it isn’t killing the legions of hell with a pair of Chaos Blades, but more importantly it’s a living.

See you tomorrow!

Doctor Who!!!

Those of you who read my profile pages on different social networking sites will know that I love me some Doctor Who! this is kind of a messy year for the Who mythology with one of it’s greatest Doctors (David Tennant) leaving and being replaced by a much younger actor (Matt Smith). Instead of a normal season this year they are doing five special episodes spread out over the year.

They have already released the first one: Planet of the Dead!

Here’s a trailer:

Aside from Tom Baker, David Tennant has been my favorite Doctor. He plays the role with such child-like enthusiasm one minute and then can turn on a dime the next and be brooding, sharp and terrifying. The rumor mill has run rampant with who is coming back this season, what the stories will revolve around and which classic enemies will make their return. If the last few years have proven anything, though, it’s that the rumor mill is usually full of it and for every fact that actually makes it out of the BBC production offices there are thirty “red herrings” mucking up the water. We’ll see what eventually makes it to the screen.

Speaking of seeing, I need to get over to Tortuga now and see about getting this episode…

See you tomorrow!
