Thoughts on Things & Stuff

It’s been a light blogging month which can be attributed to two major things things: time – the incessant excuse – and lack of writing topics.

Time I only have excuses for. I’ve been working on other projects, mostly for corporate clients so I can’t really share the results directly, and been getting ready for a speaking engagement in Chicago this September, more info on that later.

Topic wise it isn’t so much that there haven’t been topics to discuss as they are topics I don’t like to discuss here. When I started this blog it was just a writing exercise. It was just supposed to be a place where I could put my thoughts down and practice getting ideas out that maybe a few other folks would enjoy. As I started to like it and as the readership grew I tried to write with a point. We have the Actor 101 posts, the Project: Iron Man posts and the performance announcement posts. Those are all working out well and I really like doing them. Something I’ve always avoided on this blog are the “dangerous two” topics of polite conversation: politics and religion. They are polarizing subjects and it’s easy for points to be lost in translation. Rarely does it cause discussion because it seems like everyone is more interested in yelling louder than actually finding solutions. It’s been a tough season to avoid thinking about politics. With the Zimmerman trial being all the craze on the cable news networks, the uprisings in Egypt and Edward Snowden there are major things happening in our world and in our country right now that just can’t be ignored. Rene and I have spent a lot of time talking about it, debating things and actually researching things (my high school teachers would be so proud!).

I’ve sat down to write here several times only to delete what I’ve written because I don’t want to break my rule: no politics, no religion.

It’s getting hard to avoid because this rush of ideas is building up in my mind. So to help stave off a burst blood vessel and maintain my rule I’ve actually made a list of some of the documentaries that I’ve watched recently that I have enjoyed because they have made me think and I think they are good enough for you to watch. Clicking on the image should take you to the Amazon link where you can rent or buy the movie. I watched them all on Netflix.

– Revenge of the Electric Car

I don’t like cars. I’m not a car guy. If I could I would never own a car…
…but I live and work in Southern California and so not having a car is not an option. If I have to own a car I don’t want to pay for gas. In fact I’ve got a whole newsstand worth of issues with oil companies, but that’s not what this movie is about. This is a great look at the resurgence of the electric car and how it really is a viable option and not just some hippie pipe dream. I’ve always wanted my next car to not require gas and it looks like the major car manufacturers are going to help make that dream a reality.
– The Yes Men Fix the World
If you aren’t familiar with the Yes Men check out the link. Rene and I were at the Sundance Film Festival the year this movie was accepted and I wanted tickets to it SO BAD, but we just couldn’t get them. Every available ticket was gone as soon as it was available –  and it was one of the years when we had our corporate sponsorship with all the special ticket privileges and everything, it was just that popular. This thought provoking film forces the veiwer to face the idea of corporate ethics and the disparity between the importance of profits versus common sense and people. Their pranks are also very entertaining, even if their end results are not as world changing as they had hoped.
– Hot Coffee
I’m sure you’ve all heard of the case of the woman who sued McDonald’s because her coffee was too hot. It has been the butt of jokes for decades, hell I’ve even made some myself. This shows the real story behind the case, how severe the injuries really were (seriously, be ready for some very shocking and graphic images) and how changes in tort reform are effecting the civil justice system. Very eye opening and, as a guy who regularly uses a mediation clause in his contracts, it made me examine my personal motivations as to how I build my contracts. If you have any interest in the civil justice system, and you probably should have at least a passing interest, this is good to see.
– Kumare
This is one of my favorite documentaries ever. A man presents himself as a yoga guru and builds a practice in the self-help world telling his followers the truth in a very skillfully built lie – but is it really lying? Challenging notions of what it means to be a religious leader versus a marketing leader, this film leads you down the rabbit hole as one man seeks out his own path to faith. Seriously, take the time, it’s so worth it.
I look forward to your thoughts on these. Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment.
See you next time!

Dogs and Cats, Living Together, Mass Hysteria!

I didn’t sleep much last night.

Charlie the cat got in a fight with the in-law’s dog, Maggie, and while Maggie could have literally swallowed Charlie in two bites, it was Charlie who did the damage.

Not that it wasn’t somewhat warranted. Charlie is NOT used to the environment at their house. He was supposed to have the front room all to himself as he got used to the place. But Maggie is a big dog who wanted to say hello in the most direct way possible and stormed into the room making a b-line for the cat.

I didn’t actually see what happened, I was in another room, but I did see the aftermath.

Maggie: 80 pounds of lovable bruiser who does not know her own strength.

Charlie: 12 pounds of frightened cat who, even at his best, is a bit claw happy.

Charlie did some basic reconstruction of Maggie’s face and there was blood every where – all Maggie’s.

We cleaned up the scene, didn’t take any pictures (we were more concerned about Maggie’s face) and then cleaned up the animals. By the amount of blood on Charlie you would have thought he had a gaping wound on him, but no it was all Maggie blood. Rene even said, “The dog bleeds like she’s in a Quentin Tarantino movie.”

We cleaned up her face, slathered her in ointment, and she lay, very sad that she and Charlie were not friends, for about thirty minutes before she tried to come into the room again.

So you might be wondering why I’m going into great detail about a cat and dog fight – something that could happen any day of the week.

Here’s a picture of Maggie this morning, on the mend and not too much worse for wear:

Maggie is a pit bull.

Eighty pounds of dog who is strong and determined and, by her physical features, could have killed Charlie many times over – but she didn’t because that was never what she wanted.

Pit Bulls get such a bad rap just because bad people like to teach them to do bad things.

Maggie is bull headed (no pun intended) and a little on the “simple” side, but all she wanted to do was love Charlie. It’s just when you see eighty pounds of dog coming at you in a hurry it’s easy to be frightened. And that’s a big reason why I wanted to address this today. Fear gets in the way of a lot of things, progress and understanding being two of them. And it isn’t just about Pit Bulls (although I do hope that one day soon Farankie won’t be banned from a whole bunch of cities in the U.S. and countries abroad) it’s about a lot of things. Sometimes it worth taking some time to reflect on the things that scare you so you can actually explore why they scare you. When you get past the scariness of it you can start to understand it, and if you understand it then you are that much closer to defeating it.

What do you fear? Would you rearrange it’s face if you had the chance? Let me know in the comments.

See you next time.

Insurance: A National Horror?

Do you have health insurance?

Does your job provide it for you?

Do you pay for an individual plan?

Do you know what you get for your money?

How much will you pay out of pocket when you actually have to use it?

Right now Rene and I are shopping for health insurance. My marketing job has options through them and, since we have a business of our own, we have a few business and individual options available outside of that. But none of the options are all that good. Sure they cover things, but not all of it, and there are high deductibles and what the hell is co-insurance?!?

I knew that the health care industry in the United States was sketchy, but after looking at plan options yesterday, even with insurance, you’re still paying 20-50% of a medical bill. Our niece just had a $42,000.00 appendectomy. If they had one of these plans instead of the insurance her parents have as teachers they would have had to pay out of pocket $8, 400.00 – and that’s assuming 20%!

How on Earth is this acceptable?!

I still have a lot of research to do, but I’m ready to hear from you. Do you think about your coverage? Are you worried about the coming rate hikes (all premiums will be rising April 1st, with Anthem, the country’s largest provider, raising prices a whopping 19%!)? Let me know.

There will definitely be a follow up to this one…

See you next time.

Drone Strikes on U.S. Soil?

 Photograph: Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Normally I try to avoid anything too political on this blog, but drones, how they are authorized and whether or not they can be used on U.S. soil are being hotly debated in Washington D.C. right now and then MSNBC posts this story:

Fugitive alleged LAPD-killer is first drone target on U.S. soil

So I figure it’s worth a discussion.
As I read it, it looks like they’ll use the drone(s) to monitor the border in case he tries to cross into Mexico, so it isn’t like they’re using them to patrol the streets of Los Angeles. But even given that, what do you think of this? Do you think that anti-immigration groups may want to use this more actively to discourage illegal immigration? I’m interested in your thoughts, feel free to add them to the comments and I know this might be a heated issue so please keep it civil.
See you next time!

Denver, Belfast, & Why I Want You To Care About A Dead Dog

On July 11th a dog named Lennox was euthanized in Belfast, North Ireland. Why? Because he resembled a pit bull which violates the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 in the United Kingdom.

He wasn’t a pit bull, He RESEMBLED one.

He was seen by a dog warden when she was dropping off the registration papers and tags for all the dogs in the household and that dog warden decided that Lennox looked like a dog was was restricted by the Dangerous Dog Act 1991, a pit bull.

Lennox was forcefully taken away from his owners, imprisoned in inhumane conditions for two years, inspired a worldwide campaign to save him, but ultimately he was put down by the Belfast City Council the morning of Wednesday July 11th without letting the family say goodbye, returning his collar or returning his body.

For an owner of a loving and gentle pit bull, like we are, this is one of the scariest stories I’ve heard since I read about the way Denver and Miami-Dade handled their dog bans.

The links above will take you to the specific stories, there is far too much for me to try and re-type, but let me give you the over riding arc here: Breed specific Legislation means that people can and will come into your home and take your dog regardless of the pet’s actions. This is why the battle cry of anti-BSL groups is “Punish the deed, not the breed.”

I can’t even imagine what I would do if someone tried to take Frankie away from us. It is something that gets me enraged just thinking about it. And this weekend I watched as a co-worker was questioned by animal control to see if her two pound Yorkie was a threat. Animal control said that there doesn’t even need to be proof, once an accusation is made they need to investigate and if there is a second accusation they may euthanize the animal. This is horrifying.

There are a lot of things that are going on in the world right now. The middle-east is destabilized, fast food companies are the center of social protest and the U.S. election is being turned into a fundraising mockery. As our lives get more and more global, it becomes more important to make sure you are involved and educated on a local level. I can’t expect all of you who read this to understand or want to help, but this is me doing my part to raise the red flag – Breed Specific Legislation doesn’t work. Take a stand for good dogs.

SOPA & PIPA – Just Say No

The proposed bills in Congress known as SOPA and PIPA are a big deal and so are the issues they claim to deal with.

Piracy is a big deal, Wiggy VonSchtick has been a victim, but the internet isn’t going anywhere and people’s abilities to acquire whatever they want whenever they want is only going to get easier even if these bills pass.

Nanny laws only hurt people who follow the law, criminals just find a way around them.

These are complex problems that require big ideas, not censorship.

New, young entertainment business minds are already thinking of ways to curtail piracy and it’s working. Look at Louis C.K. He managed to shoot and release a downloadable comedy show and made profits that he couldn’t imagine.

Make no mistake, this is about money and how large studios make it – not about the viewer or the art of entertainment and all of that is fine! It’s required to make the big kinds of movies that people love to go see, but these pieces of legislation are not the ways to make entertainment profitable in the future.  I know that the big studios are using scare tactics to try and force creatives to their side, but these bills shoot a creative’s future in the foot.

9/11

I don’t know how to feel about today. 10 years later and it is popular right now – this very instant – to say “never forget” but it still doesn’t inform how I feel.

The attacks in 2001 were shocking and horrible – nothing changes that – but after all the sadness and after all the flowery speeches I am still wondering what’s different?

This makes me angry.

There’s still a hole in the ground at Ground Zero. I don’t understand why. Buildings can go up very fast and, in my opinion, the longer that there is still a hole there the longer it’s going to take to heal. I assume that there must be a reason because if there weren’t I’d hope that public outcry would be deafening, but I don’t know what the delay is.

Instead of making us safer the government took away civil liberties, used the fear to push policy and spent a shit load of money on combat unrelated to the attacks. Some of this anger is fueled by 20/20 hindsight, but some of this didn’t need to happen at all.

The biggest crime is that 9/11 first responders are STILL having a problem getting the medical care they need due to bureaucratic bullshit and an ineffective congress.

No matter your political leaning I think we can all agree that 9/11 was awful. It effected us in ways that we won’t truly understand for decades to come and points out the truly great and truly horrible that exists in our society here in the United States. It’s been our biggest tragedy which lead to some of our biggest heroics and our biggest failings.

We do need to remember, but not just the attacks, also the aftermath, both good and bad. And we shouldn’t make those that we call heroes suffer for a profit margin.

I open the comments to your opinions.

BONUS POST! Pit Bull Activism

People know about Rene and my Pit Bull activism and that we like to help where we can.  This is one of those times.  Here’s the message from our friend:

My brother and his girlfriend volunteer their time at a Pit Bull rescue in San Diego and foster two themselves, which they have just recently fully adopted. Their love for the dogs is contagious and I have become a fan of them as the sweet, playful pups they truly are. Anyway, I know you are a fan of Pit Bulls too.

The Union Tribune, in San Diego, is instigating another pit bull debate in SD. Please call 1(800)244-6397 ext. 2506 and let them know that we do NOT want pit bulls banned in San Diego County! (It’s all automated.) Press “2” to vote that it’s the owners’ responsibility and not the breed. And feel free to pass this on to others who might be interested.

I don’t fault the Tribune for holding a survey, but I hope that they will structure their article as fact based reporting versus exploiting a villainized breed.
If you love Pitties too, please call in – especially if you live in San Diego!

Thank you!
