Project 365 8-14-2010 Last Day At The Fair!

It was the last day at the fair and we took Dean.

Dean hasn’t been to the fair in a long time so we tried to show him all of our favorite parts in just about five hours – it was a tough mission.

I think it is best told in pictures:

By the end of the night I was bloated, my legs hurt and I could barely stay awake.

It was a great night!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-13-2010 Most. Boring. Day. Ever.

I sat in a chair for about eight hours today.

Almost a straight eight hours.

I was stuck in front of a computer reading statistics and figures and watching informational videos for the school.

Got there at 10am, left there at 8pm.  I only got up to eat and pee.

I only ate once.

I was under the impression when I got there that it would only be a couple of hours.  I even went in my gym clothes because I was headed to the gym right after – but it was not a couple of hours.

I got paid for it though and that makes it all worth it, but, man, I was unprepared for that amount of sitting.  This is why I could never pull a wage slave job, the tedium is hellish!

I still went to the gym after and looked like this when I got home:

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-12-2010 Crepes & A Cut

Had a bit of a change in plans, which is never bad as far as I’m concerned.

Unless it is bad, then it’s very upsetting.

But today was not upsetting, it was exciting!  Since my morning was suddenly free I visited my friend Dean’s house where he was hosting a brunch which consisted of crepes, both sweet and savory, and roasted potatoes and coffee and mimosas.

I’m not a very big fan of mimosas, but the coffee was very good, as was the food and so was the company!  Had the extra bonus of seeing a filmmaker friend of mine unexpectedly!  We were able to talk shop and swap some contacts, always nice to do.  And I got my haircut.

But the highlight of my day that wasn’t connecting with good friends was when I got a picture text from my director Zeke:

Apparently the Wiggy logo is making the rounds!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-11-2010 Geekin’ Out!

I made this today:

That’s my Scott Pilgrim avatar.  I have totally bought into the hype.

Well, I guess not totally because I haven’t bought any of the comics, but I liked the avatar thing.

Tonight I celebrated an area of my geeky-ness with Dean and a couple new friends.  I have many different geek sides:

  • There’s my Dungeons & Dragons side – I prefer to play a cleric.
  • There’s my table top gaming side – Warhammer 40k primarily & I stick mainly to the Games Workshop line of games even though it’s been years since I’ve actually fielded an army.
  • There’s my music geek side – It’s hard to stump me when it comes to song names and the bands who performed them.
  • There’s my sci-fi world knowledge – movies & TV shows mostly with the occasional book world thrown in.

But the side that got it all started, the side that I found interesting as a concept and not just as a play idea, was comic books.  I mentioned in an earlier BLOG about my first issue of Iron Man and how it got me started on the Golden Avenger and that interest hasn’t really waned since 1983.  Even when I was bitter and not collecting I still peeked at issues out of the corner of my eye.

Tonight my comic side was indulged as we geeked out about comics, storylines, movies and T.V. shows that were all about super heroes and the books they were drawn from.  This culminated in going through Dean’s long boxes and remembering the good ol’ days of the late 80’s and early 90’s before Image came – before the dark times.

You’d think that my picture today would be of our comic book archeology.  You’d probably think that it would be grate to have an image or two of the rare comics in Dean’s collection – some of which I had never seen before in person – or of the signed issues by very famous and infamous creators, but no:

Today’s picture is of Dean’s sink after we covered it with anti-ant & roach powder.

It looks like Tony Montana sneezed on his counter top.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-10-2010 Inception

Saw Inception with Rene tonight.

Or did I dream it?

No, totally saw it.  Totally enjoyed it.  More important to me was the just the fact that Rene and I managed to get out and actually see a movie!  I’m sure I’ve talked about this before, but it is very hard to get out to see movies when you’re trying to make them.  At least for me it is.  Add to a heavy work load the fact that Rene and I are on opposite schedules and it’s a recipe for failure.

But good planning is the anchor for success and we have a good plan!  Sunday is for Scott Pilgrim and I’m VERY excited about that!  Also I think I have laid enough subtle hints (i.e. screaming, “OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!”) to convince her to see Tron Legacy when it is in theaters as well.  Here’s hoping Disney will get another Tron ride in the park!

Speaking of Disney we saw the movie at Downtown Disney and I was surprised at how busy it was on a week night after the movie got out, which was about 11:30pm:

I don’t know if this picture really shows the number of people that were there, but it’s the picture that I got.  Most of the restaurants were closed too, so I have no idea what they were able to do.

I’m sure they found something.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-9-2010 Judge, Jury & Jailer

I am a prisoner.

You are a prisoner.

We are all prisoners and our prison is one that we cannot ever escape that binds us in chains that never give.

Our jailer?  Time.

Time never stops, does not care for your excuses and never shows mercy.  Conversely time does not make considerations based on sex or creed and proceeds at a set rate, never changing.  But still there is only so much time per day and no matter what you do you can never create more or sweet talk it into sticking around.  Time moves on, time does not wait and time will leave you behind if you are not caught up.

Time is a bitch and sometimes I feel like it is laughing at me!

I am so grateful for how things are progressing right now: I’m getting married to a wonderful girl, business is (finally) picking up and my plan to be completely out of all debt is coming together in ways I did not expect, but there is a lot to do and time management, as I’ve discussed before, continues to be my biggest struggle.  I’ve taken the only step that I can to ensure that I have more time during business hours and that is to wake up earlier – significantly earlier – which, thus far, has helped.

But time is a cruel judge and even on days when I feel very productive the check list never seems to have enough ticks off of it.  So I saw this:

I saw it as the wooden avatar of time ignoring me.

That bastard!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-8-2010 Duck Poop

It feels like everyone I know is traveling except me.  Rene just got back from doing a show in Portland, my Dad leaves for Philadelphia soon and both of my parents just got back from visiting family in Indiana.

My travel itch is dying to be scratched, but there’s no way that we can take the time right now to go anywhere unless it’s business related – which has motivated me to get something going outside of the state!

One of the things I like best about traveling is the fun local goodies that are available no matter where you end up.  Rene brought home one of these delightful treats from Portland:

Yep, duck droppings.

It’s candy.

Praline covered peanuts dipped in chocolate.

They also have powdered sugar on them – which just adds to the duck poop look.

I would have taken a picture of them in all their poopy glory but every time I took one out of the bag I ate it.

For poop it was really tasty.

For that matter for candy it was really tasty!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-7-2010 Checkin’ Out

Brain is mush.

I’ve been sitting in front of the computer looking at the screen but not really doing much about it so I gave in, called up Dean and I left the house.

We got dinner, I had some beer:

Now I’m going to sleep and worry about being productive tomorrow.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-6-2010 Men’s Formal Wear

I don’t have much in me today, not much sleep this week so it’s hard to concentrate on things to write – but write I shall!

I know I said I wouldn’t just post about my days anymore, but today was a day that included a very particular task: finding the formal wear for our wedding!

It looked a little something like this:

I don’t even have a picture of the final choices in here, but I would like to thank Diane at Friar Tux for being so understanding and helpful.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 8-5-2010 Is it an addiction if everyone uses it?

What is the most terrifying thing that can happen to a person who’s business relies on the internet?

The whole of the internet crashing in the middle of the day!

THE WHOLE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A close second is when your connection to the internet randomly drops in the middle of sending an email to a client, which is a hell of a lot more likely and happened to me today.

See that little yellow triangle?  That’s not good.  Still not sure what happened, it just dropped and all the phones went dead.  There were a few options that sprung to mind and so this is what I imagine might have happened:

  1. They are putting a new roof on the house and it is possible that the workers accidentally unplugged or damaged a wire or connector somewhere.
  2. AT&T were doing maintenance on the switch box at the end of the street and, for whatever reason, disengaged the line(s).
  3. Aliens, experimenting with human behavior like in an old episode of “The Twilight Zone,” decided to test my reaction to losing the internet connection.

I think the third is the most obvious answer.  When the connection dropped I was stunned into non-action.  I clicked on the little internet bars, checked the network, ran tests… all the things that you learn in Internet 101 that you should do if things go non-responsive.  Once I exhausted the “on computer” options I went to the modem and started fooling with that.  That’s when I saw the red flashing light – the DSL connection was gone!

That made me panic a bit – I don’t know how to fix a problem in the walls – so I checked the phone and it was tone-less.

That’s when my right eye twitched and I got very annoyed.

I asked the workmen if they had noticed any wires while they were working, they hadn’t.

I really didn’t know what else to do so I called AT&T and tried to get someone on the phone to report the outage.  Turns out they don’t do the whole “people-on-the-phone” thing anymore so I talked to a very nice computer simulation of a person who took my report and then scheduled an appointment for workman to come out – NEXT WEEK!

What was I gonna’ do for a week without the internet?!!?!?

I went right to my phone and resigned myself to the idea that it would be my computer for the next week as I waited.  Then I started thinking about places with WI-FI that i could work at – but it’s really hard to do business calls at a Starbucks, especially when you aren’t drinking coffee (the baristas start to talk).  I left the house to do errands bitching via Twitter and in texts to friends and loved ones about how my day was suddenly ruined from lack of internet and it made me realize – as it has several times before – just how easy it is to take all the information that we have access to at all times for granted.

By the time I got home whatever was wrong was suddenly fixed.  Facebook updated, the email I had been trying to send was sent and suddenly my buffer speeds on YouTube were faster, but for about two hours I felt like a caveman.

Am I addicted?  And if you said “no” is it possible that you’re addicted too and just don’t want to admit it?  Or is it OK since I use the internet for my business?  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

See you tomorrow!
