The one thing I can say about re-branding yourself and becoming a “startup” is that you find all kinds of things as you troll through your social media and online accounts. Let’s say you are going through your YouTube page so you can re-brand the channel. You may find that there were some videos you had forgotten about, like this one from an Improv Shmimprov show many years ago. Heads up – maybe a little NSFW and if the kids are under 13 you might want to watch it first.
The new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers are pretty great! I can’t wait until May! And the stand out star so far has been the Hulk-Buster armor that Iron Man fights the Hulk in. Let’s check the tape:
Pretty cool, right? There’s something about two big things beating the crap out of each other that just says “blockbuster!” Is there anything else that can explain the success of the Bay-former movies? But I don’t want to get distracted.
The Hulkbuster first appeared in 1994 during a series of stories written by Len Kaminski and penciled by Kev Hopgood where Iron Man was trying to clean up old Stane factories that were polluting the environment or working on hazardous projects. Each issue had a different guest star including Venom (he was being positioned as a hero at the time), Deathlok and Smart Hulk (when the Hulk had the strength of the hulk, the mind of Bruce Banner and the attitude of the grey Hulk… ask a comic geek, they’ll tell you what that all mean. It was the 90’s). The technical first appearance of the Hulkbuster is in Iron Man 304, but it’s just the final page as a teaser for the next month.

All the actual Hulkbuster action is in Iron Man 305 “Green Politics.”

The original Hulkbuster was actual a series of add on bits for the armor that Iron Man used at the time called, believe it or not, the Modular Armor which switched out systems and weapons on a mission specific basis. A lot of different bits and bobs were created and used, but the Hulkbuster stands out and the only truly memorable one.
Since then there have been many versions of the Hulkbuster in both art and action figure form. I was going to post some of those images here but it’s actually worth seeing how much has been created so HERE’S A LINK TO A GOOGLE IMAGES SEARCH.
Film wise, we all thought we were getting a Hulkbuster in Iron Man 3, but instead we got “Igor”:

It was a little disappointing.
Then we got this concept art from Age of Ultron:

And all Iron Man geek hearts were a-flutter!
Seeing the Hulkbuster in action is just whetting my appetite even more and you know I’ll be first in line when Avengers 2 comes out in May!
Well, first in line at a reasonable hour, I’m too old for midnight shows anymore.

They are finally able to be released publicly! The shorts we made for Fun Size Horror are now available for public view.
“Bloody Mary” was a fun bit of filmmaking made under surprise conditions. Originally we had a different crew, location and equipment – but then there was some bad luck behind the scenes. Thanks to some help from Fun Size founder Zeke Pinheiro we were able to shoot and get this in on time.
Give it a look and then watch it a bunch more and tell a friend. More next week!
So Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” feat. Charlie XCX is arguably the song of the summer for 2014 but I would argue that Weird Al should actually take the title. Here is his parody as well as the original, for comparison.
I had the pleasure of working with director Matt Piedmont on a PSA for AdCouncil this week. It was a blast! It’s a fun spot and the crew were tight and efficient. We worked so quickly that I didn’t have a chance to geek out on him about one of Rene and my favorite short films: Brick Novax’s Diary! We saw it the year it premiered at Sundance as part of a shorts program. It was in the morning and we were still groggy from the events the evening before. This short perked us up and was all we talked about for hours afterward. It even came up in conversation recently when Rene brought it up to the executive director of the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival.
So here, presented in this post, I give you Brick Novax’s Diary. Enjoy!
Special Fun Video Friday this week. If you follow me on any social media then you may have seen my recent posts about trying to protect net neutrality and asking the FCC to consider the internet a title II common carrier so that the big ISP’s can’t have control over the speed or content that you receive online. You would think that in America of all places the internet would remain a bastion of freedom, but you’d be wrong. Right now the future of the internet is teetering and could go either way. We as citizens need to stand up! The first video for today covers, quite well, why net neutrality is important and how to take action. I’m sure many of you have signed petitions on the subject, but the best way to comment is directly to the FCC. I’ve included the link below. Please watch this, follow the link and help protect this vital communication system.
Here’s a fun video from YouTuber John Smith, the same guy who did the great 50th Anniversary Trailer way back before we knew anything. It tells the tale of two of the most interesting beings in the universe meeting for the first time – in the TARDIS! It is a pretty impressive bit of fan fic and a fun way to see two of Steven Moffat’s creations come together.
If you have one I want to hear all about what you felt and what things moved and how the lights went on and off; yes tell me all about it – but I prefer if you have pictures and video. And I don’t mean just orbs or mist, I don’t care, show me the good stuff!
Back in 1993 the TV show Sightings had the good stuff. For about a year in 1993-1994 they covered a story called “The Heartland Ghost” where it seemed that a ghost of a young girl was haunting a house and terrorizing the man who lived there. So many things were caught on camera (as well as plenty of things off camera that are worth being skeptical about) that the story was revisited on more than 5 different occasions – including two web based episodes powered by AOL.
Yes, AOL.
I’m not saying this is definitive proof of anything, but today’s video is just about all of the Heartland Ghost episodes combined into one video:
Now, as I mentioned, this is by no means proof of anything. I do think that the stories presented in the Sightings episodes are, at least on the surface, presented in an honest way. But the Sallie story made minor celebrities out of Tony and Debra and they have continued to be associated with all things Sallie – including doing episodes of A Haunting and Paranormal Witness, both being programs that have been known to take liberties with the narratives they are sharing. To be fair, Tony and Debra have responded to how the editing was done on the Official Sallie House web site, in that they had no control over it, but it wasn’t until I saw the episode that I had ever heard that everything might be demonic or that there was a ghost of an old woman(?!?). Anyway, as a bonus here’s a quick peek at the Paranormal Witness version of the heat-sensing camera footage that you can see happen live in the Sightings footage. It’s pretty different and far more dramatic (surprise, surprise):
I couldn’t find a clip from A Haunting.
What do you think? I look forward to your thoughts!
I collected a massive amount of space Lego and created variation after variation of space craft. I grew up in the ’80’s when Lego was beginning it’s renaissance and moving beyond the simple “brick” and started adding tubes and special shapes that are now very common.
I still remember my favorite ship – it was two-pieces where the front could disengage from the back and the back became a base for your guys. I even found a picture!

Just writing this is putting me in happy-memory-land.
The kids of today have all kinds of cool new options and licenses of Lego (including the AVENGERS!!!!) and now they are getting a movie – and it looks really good! For today’s Fun Video Friday I present the trailer for The Lego Movie:
